Your suspension system is integral to the safety and performance of your car. While your tyres hug the road, your springs and shock absorbers connect your wheels to the rest of the vehicle. Good suspension supports road handling, promotes safe braking, and ensures a smooth and happy ride.

Along with your wheels and tyres, your suspension is responsible for how your car moves, stops, and remains connected with the contours and bumps of the road. Your suspension comes with two basic components: springs, and dampers. The springs provide the bounce that separates you from the road, and the dampers or absorbers smooth out your ride by protecting your car from constant bouncing. This push-and-pull relationship has been refined over the years, with different technology used to create movement and compression.

Modern suspension also comes in two basic types: dependent, and independent suspension. Dependent systems share a single axle between the left and right wheels, with this system still common in rear suspension and some trucks. Independent suspension comes in a number of different flavours, including the Macpherson strut, double wishbone system, and multi-link system among others.
